A Heritage of Community Gathering

The Winter Carnival carries forward a tradition of community celebration that has defined Powassan for generations—where neighbors become friends, families create memories, and the spirit of rural Ontario thrives.

Powassan's Tradition of Coming Together

For more than 125 years, Powassan has been a community that gathers. From the establishment of the Powassan Agricultural Society in 1895 to today's Winter Carnival, the tradition of bringing people together for celebration, competition, and connection has remained central to who we are.

The Winter Carnival continues this legacy—transforming cold February days into moments of warmth, laughter, and shared purpose around Family Day weekend.

Built on Foundations of Cooperation

Powassan's earliest settlers understood the importance of shared public spaces. Early figures like William Faulkner Clark donated land and opened their homes as gathering places, establishing a pattern of community generosity that endures today.

Where Generations Meet

For local families, community events have become generational traditions—parents and grandparents bringing children to the same venues they once visited themselves. These gatherings reinforce community continuity and belonging.

The Trout Creek Community Centre's Role

As the hub for Winter Carnival, the Trout Creek Community Centre embodies Powassan's commitment to shared public gathering spaces. It serves the same essential purpose as the fairgrounds, church halls, and community centers before it—providing a place where the community comes together.

This is why preserving the Centre matters: it's not just a building, but the continuation of a tradition that has shaped rural life here for over a century.

Values That Endure

The same principles that shaped early agricultural fairs and community gatherings continue to define the Winter Carnival today:

  • Community connection — bringing people together across generations
  • Shared effort — volunteers and organizations working in cooperation
  • Celebration of local culture — honoring what makes Powassan unique
  • Creating lasting memories — moments families carry forward

"Powassan's history is preserved not only in records and buildings, but in the continued gathering of its people—year after year—on grounds shaped by generations before them."

The Trout Creek Community Centre is more than a building.
It's where kids learned to skate, families gathered, and neighbours became lifelong friends.

It stands in a proud tradition of community gathering that has shaped Powassan since 1895—from agricultural fairs and church halls to today's Winter Carnival and public skates. These spaces have always been where our community comes together.

Our mission is to preserve, repair, and protect this space so it can continue serving the community — now and for generations to come.

Operated for decades as Trout Creek's rink and community hall • Hosts Winter Carnival, hockey tournaments, skating, and community events • Structural remediation planning in progress with the Municipality of Powassan • Continuing a 125+ year tradition of community gathering spaces in Powassan

Why This Matters Now

A recent structural assessment confirmed that significant repairs are required to ensure the long-term safety and usability of the Trout Creek Community Centre.

The Municipality has taken important steps toward permanent remediation by advancing engineering design work — but community support remains essential to keep momentum, demonstrate commitment, and be ready when funding opportunities arise.

This is a moment where action matters.

Official Status & Progress

The Municipality of Powassan is leading the official repair and remediation process. Key milestones include:

  • Structural assessment completed — Engineering report identified required repairs
  • Council review and approval — Municipality committed to moving forward
  • Design phase initiated — Engineering design work underway
  • Community fundraising active — Team Tucker Trout supporting local readiness
